After a long phase of development as the 1.9 series, version 2.0 of the security-suite GNU Privacy Guard has been released.
GnuPG has grown as an open-source implementation of the OpenPGP standard. OpenPGP is the most widely used email encryption standard in the world. It is defined by the OpenPGP Working Group of the Internet Engineering Task Force. The OpenPGP standard was originally derived from PGP (Pretty Good Privacy), first created by Phil Zimmermann in 1991.More about OpenPGP can be found at www.secure-my-email.com
Version 2.0 supplements the 1.x series by adding S/MIME support as well as OpenPGP support, in addition to the gpg-agent which can be quite useful if having multiple keys to keep track of.
Note that version 1 and version 2 can be installed simultaneously, version 2.0 will use the binary gpg2 for its OpenPGP implementation. There will also be continued development for the 1.x series.
