The Mozilla Foundation announced Thunderbird 2 Beta 1 some days ago ( www.mozilla.com ). I've tried some alpha releases before, but now I made a fresh backup and am using it for production.
It works quite nicely with the nightly build of Enigmail ( enigmail.mozdev.org ) to add OpenPGP ( www.secure-my-email.com ) support.
The feature I like the most is the ability to tag messages, yes this is something you have in the gmail web interface as well, but it does solve some thoughts as to where to locate a message that falls into multiple categories, and in my opinion is a natural development.
Version 2.0 of Thunderbird, like the corresponding Firefox version does seem a lot faster. So it is absolutely a nice development.
